Beard and Mustache Transplantation – MDO Health Tourism

Beard and Mustache Transplantation

At MDO Health Tourism, beard and mustache transplants are customized to perfectly match your facial contours and hair growth patterns. Our experienced team aims for results that look “like hair, not lines” with natural angle-direction (5-15°) and correct graft distribution. We manage your treatment process from start to finish; we are by your side during consultation, surgery, recovery follow-up, and final checks.

We work with modern technologies and offer a process designed for international patients (VIP transfer, interpreter support, accommodation options). Our goal is not just to fill in the gaps; it is to ensure that your mustache, sideburns, cheeks, and jawline form a permanent and natural whole that is in harmony with your face.

What is Beard and Mustache Transplantation?

It is the permanent filling of gaps caused by thinning, trauma/scarring (wounds-burns), or genetic reasons with hair follicles taken from the donor area (usually the back of the neck). Single grafts are used for the mustache line and contours; double/multiple grafts are used in areas where more volume is desired. The goal is to ensure that the direction, angle, and density are compatible with the facial anatomy.

How is Beard and Mustache Transplantation Performed?

  1. Examination and Planning: Your facial analysis, hair growth direction, and target density are determined; graft requirements are calculated.
  2. Donor Harvesting (FUE): Roots are collected from the nape area using a micro motor; roots are preserved in a cold solution.
  3. Implantation: Depending on the situation, either DHI (Choi pen) or the channel technique is used. The angle and direction are adjusted to match the natural beard growth.
  4. Duration: Depending on the size of the area, it takes an average of 3-6 hours and is performed comfortably under local anesthesia.

Is beard transplantation permanent?

Yes. The hair follicles at the back of the scalp are resistant to shedding, so the transplanted hair is permanent. Temporary shedding (shock loss) between 2–4 weeks after the procedure is normal; new growth begins around 3–4 months, visible density appears around 6–8 months, and the final result is achieved around 9–12 months.

Which Method Is Used for Beard and Mustache Transplantation?

  • FUE + DHI: Ideal for small areas, mustache contouring, and areas requiring high directional control.
  • FUE + Channel Technique: Preferred for denser transplants over larger areas. The choice is determined by the physician based on the size of the area, target density, and hair direction sensitivity. In most cases, a hybrid approach yields the most natural results.

What is the Post-Operative Recovery Process Like?

  • 0–3 Days: Redness/swelling may occur; avoid lying face down.
  • 3–7 Days: Crusting is normal; clinical washing protocol is applied.
  • 10–14 Days: Scabs fall off, mild itching may occur.
  • 2–4 Weeks: Temporary shedding period.
  • 3–4 Months: New hairs begin to grow.
  • 6–12 Months: Density and texture mature, final appearance is complete.

What Should Be Considered?

Before:

Stop taking blood thinners, alcohol, and smoking for the period recommended by your doctor. If you have an active skin infection/eczema, it should be treated first.

After:

  • For the first 10 days, protect the area from impact, friction, hot showers/saunas/pools.
  • Wash according to the provided instructions; do not scratch or pick at the area.
  • Sports: Light activities are appropriate after 7 days, intense/sweaty sports after 14 days.
  • Shaving: Trimming with scissors/clipper is recommended after 10 days; close shaving with a razor is recommended after 1 month.
  • Sun: Avoid direct sun for the first 3–4 weeks; use high SPF sunscreen afterwards.

Beard and Mustache Transplantation FAQs

At MDO Health Tourism, we provide world-class medical treatments with expert doctors and accredited hospitals in Türkiye. Our mission is to combine high-quality healthcare with personalized travel services for a safe and comfortable patient experience.

1) How many grafts are needed?
The requirement depends on the size of the gap and the desired density: 400–800 grafts for the mustache line only, 800–1,800 grafts for sideburn/cheek enhancement, and 2,000–3,500+ grafts for full beard reconstruction. The exact number is determined during consultation, based on facial proportions and donor capacity.
2) Is the donor area only the scalp, or can grafts be taken from under the beard as well?
The standard donor area is the scalp (permanent and strong follicles). In suitable cases, limited grafts can also be taken from the submental (under-chin/neck) beard area to improve beard-to-beard harmony. The final decision depends on the density required and donor safety.
3) How is a natural appearance achieved? Will the transplant look obvious?
The key to naturalness lies in using single grafts for contours and multiple grafts for central areas, with placement at 5–15° angles according to the natural growth direction of each region. The mustache and midline are designed with a straighter angle, while the cheek and jawline areas are angled more obliquely. With proper distribution and techniques such as micro-channel or pen implantation, the result mimics real hair growth rather than looking like “implants.”
4) Will there be scars? When can I return to work/daily life?
In FUE harvesting, the micro scars are hidden within the hair and are barely noticeable. Redness and crusting on the face usually resolve within 7–10 days. Most patients return to desk jobs within 2–3 days, while those with physically demanding work are advised to wait 10–14 days.
5) Who is not suitable, and what are the risks?
Beard and mustache transplantation may be postponed or contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled diabetes, active skin infections/dermatitis, a strong tendency to develop keloids, or serious clotting disorders. Possible risks include temporary redness, swelling, scabbing, folliculitis, rare infection, or lower-than-expected graft survival in certain areas. At MDO Health Tourism, these risks are minimized through strict aseptic protocols, graft preservation, and personalized density-planning strategies.
